In the heart of central campus, Sterling Memorial Library is the largest of 14 libraries at Yale and one of the University’s most iconic buildings. Completed in 1930, it houses more than 2.5 million volumes on 14 floors of book stacks. Designed by architect James Gamble Rogers (Yale Class of 1889) and later named for its benefactor, John William Sterling (Yale Class of 1864), the library is built in the Collegiate Gothic style to resemble a European cathedral.

The gallery features more than 4,000 works on display as well as a rooftop terrace and a sculpture garden. Galleries showcase artworks from ancient times to the present, including vessels from Tang-dynasty China, early Italian paintings, textiles from Borneo, treasures of American art, masks from West Africa, modern and contemporary art, ancient sculptures, masterworks by Degas, van Gogh, and Picasso, and more.
Lockers are available on a limited basis. Large bags, backpacks, shopping bags, umbrellas, food, and drinks are not permitted in the museum.
